Kamado Joe Classic II Review
The Classic II is the kamado that ships ready to cook out of the box. Multi-tier rack, Air Lift hinge, and a real cart make it the most approachable serious kamado purchase.
This review is based on manufacturer specifications, warranty details, retailer documentation, and category fit. It does not claim hands-on testing.
Verdict
If you want a kamado that ships with the accessories most cooks need on day one, the Classic II is the right choice. The Divide & Conquer rack system is genuinely useful, and the Air Lift hinge makes opening the heavy lid easier than on competing kamados.
Editorial rating: 4.7 / 5. Editorial rating based on published specs, warranty, and category fit. Not based on hands-on testing.
What we like
The included accessories tip the balance. The Divide & Conquer multi-tier rack is the kamado feature that pays back every cook. Air Lift hinge reduces the lid weight enough that one-handed opens become possible.
The cast iron cart and folding side shelves are premium-grade. The cooker arrives essentially complete — you can cook on day one without buying additional gear.
Lifetime ceramic warranty matches the Big Green Egg.
What we don’t
Heavy. The full assembled weight (250+ lb) means you choose its spot once.
Slow temperature changes — climbing from 225°F to 450°F takes 25 minutes. This is true of all kamados.
The premium price is real. If you don’t use the multi-tier rack system, you’re paying for features you may not need.
Best for
Cooks who want to start with a complete setup, brisket and pork-shoulder smokers, pizza enthusiasts, anyone who wants a single cooker for the backyard.
Avoid if
You want a portable cooker, you cook on weeknights and want fast startup, or your budget can’t accommodate the $1,500+ entry point.
Long-term ownership
The ceramic body is essentially permanent. The cart and side shelves can show wear over 10+ years. Replacement parts (gaskets, hinge springs, fire ring) are widely available through Kamado Joe and third-party suppliers.

Frequently asked questions
Classic II vs Classic III — which to pick?
Classic III adds the SlōRoller heat diffuser and an updated cart. SlōRoller produces more even smoke distribution and is genuinely useful for brisket and pork shoulder. Worth the upgrade for serious smokers.
Kamado Joe vs Big Green Egg — which is the better kamado?
Both are excellent. Kamado Joe ships with more accessories included (cart, multi-tier rack, ash tool). Big Green Egg has a larger accessory ecosystem if you want to build it up over time. Pricing is broadly comparable at equivalent sizes.
