Char-Broil Performance Series 4-Burner Review
If you need a gas grill under $400 and you want four burners with a side burner, the Char-Broil Performance Series is the standard pick. Expect 3–6 years of service life with cover storage and seasonal care.
This review is based on manufacturer specifications, warranty details, retailer documentation, and category fit. It does not claim hands-on testing.
Verdict
The Char-Broil Performance is a budget-tier grill that delivers more burners and BTUs than competing entry models. The catch is steel thickness and a 1-year limited warranty. For renters, first-time buyers, or anyone who needs a grill now without saving up, it's a reasonable buy.
Editorial rating: 3.8 / 5. Editorial rating based on published specs and category fit. Not based on hands-on testing.
What we like
Four burners and a side burner at the price of most three-burner competitors. 425 sq in primary cook area is generous for the tier. The Performance Series assembles relatively cleanly (most reviews mention 60–90 minutes).
Heat distribution across the four zones is acceptable, especially after the porcelain-coated grates are seasoned a few cooks in.
What we don’t
Steel thickness is the obvious downgrade from premium tiers. The lid and firebox use thinner gauge metal, which means more heat loss and faster finish wear.
The 1-year limited warranty is short. Burner replacements after year 2 are common.
Side table real estate is modest. Wheel quality varies.
Best for
Renters, first-time grill buyers under $400, anyone who needs a grill now and plans to upgrade in 4–5 years.
Avoid if
You want a grill that will last a decade — save up for a Weber Spirit instead. If you live in a humid or salt-air climate, the thinner steel will frustrate you within 2–3 years.
Setup tips
Use a torque-limiting screwdriver during assembly — the included self-tapping screws can strip thin-gauge brackets.
Buy a cover immediately. Char-Broil’s branded cover is fine; aftermarket covers from Classic Accessories are also good. Uncovered storage takes 2 years off the life.

Frequently asked questions
How long will this grill last?
Realistic expectations: 3–6 years with covered storage and seasonal cleaning. Burners typically fail first. The chassis lasts longer if you keep it dry.
Char-Broil Performance vs Weber Spirit — which is the better buy?
The Weber Spirit costs about 50% more. If you can stretch the budget, the Spirit is the better long-term value because of its 10-year warranty and parts ecosystem. If $400 is a hard ceiling, the Char-Broil is the right pick at this price.
