What built-in grills are

Built-in grills are gas grills designed to be enclosed in non-combustible cabinetry (concrete, stone, masonry, or rated metal). They share burners and cooking surfaces with freestanding models but use sealed bottoms, heat shielding, and clearance specifications that allow safe installation in a permanent enclosure.

Planning a built-in install

  1. Cutout dimensions. Every manufacturer publishes precise width, depth, and height for the cooker enclosure. Frame the cabinetry to these specs.
  2. Combustible clearances. Wood pergolas, vinyl siding, and other combustibles require minimum distances. Read the install manual.
  3. Gas source. Decide natural gas vs propane before plumbing. Conversion later is possible but adds cost.
  4. Service access. Burners, igniters, and regulators will eventually need replacement. Allow rear or bottom service access.
  5. Drainage. Outdoor cabinets need water management. Sloped tops, weep holes, and stainless drip pans help.

What to look for

  • 304-grade stainless for cooking surfaces and exterior panels.
  • Sealed bottoms rated for built-in install.
  • 10-year+ warranty on burners and grates.
  • Replaceable parts with publicly available pricing.

Maintenance

Same as freestanding gas grills, with the addition of cabinet maintenance: keep the cabinet drained, inspect seals annually, and address any pooling water before it reaches electrical components.

Frequently asked questions

Should the cabinet be built first or the grill chosen first?

Choose the grill first. Build the cabinet around the grill's cutout dimensions, clearances, and service access requirements. Cabinets designed first often force compromises later.

Can I convert a freestanding grill to built-in?

No. Freestanding grills are not rated for the heat retention of an enclosed surround. Always use a grill specifically rated as built-in.
